Club History

In late 2000 Martin Pursch and Mark Cole decided to hold a meeting to see if there was any interest in forming a fly fishing club. They invited all interested persons to meet at Martin Pursch’s Country Fly Fisher Shop in February of 2001. Approximately 10 people attended. Martin and Mark laid out their plan for the club. It was decided that the club would be called “The Heart of the Hills Fly Fishers”.

Martin and Mark acted as co-leaders for the group for the first year, holding a monthly meeting at the Country Fly Fisher Shop. In January 2002 The Heart of the Hills Fly Fishers became officially organized and elected its first officers.

Meetings soon became too large for Martin’s small shop and are now held at the Fredericksburg EMS building.

The club has actively worked to teach fly fishing to others in the community and the Texas Hill Country. Octoberfisch, the club’s premier event, features a full range of classes of fly fishing skills.

Oktoberfisch was the idea of Steve Rawls and has become an event enjoyed by fly fishers from all over the state. This annual October event features shuttles, classes, lots of fishing, fly tying, presenters and more.

In 2005 the club elected to change the name of the club to “The Fredericksburg Fly Fishers”.
